The monkey and the cats
One afternoon two cats were walking along a road with lots of trees and only one house. They saw a farmer sitting in the garden of his house. He was eating a sandwich. The cats went into the garden. ‘I hope he gives us something to eat’, said one of the cats. ‘I am really hungry’. ‘Me too’, said the other cat. The farmer saw the cats but did not give them anything to eat. They left the garden but suddenly they saw a loaf of bread lying under a tree. Both jumped upon it and caught the loaf at the same time. ‘It is mine; I saw it first’, said one cat. ‘No, I saw it first and so it’s mine’, said the other cat. They fought for a while and then one cat said, ‘Let’s break the loaf into two pieces and we can take one piece each’. ‘Good idea’, said the other cat. But we must break it into two pieces that are the same size, they both thought.
A monkey sitting on the branch of another tree heard everything the cats said. That loaf of bread looks good, the monkey thought. I would like it for myself, he thought. Slowly he came down from the tree and walked up to the cats.
‘Hello, my dear friends! Can I help you?’ asked the monkey. The cats told the monkey about their problem. The monkey smiled and said; ‘That’s easy, I will break the loaf into two pieces for you’. The clever monkey broke the bread into two pieces. But one piece was a little bigger that the other. ‘Oh no! I will take a little bite of this bigger piece to make both the same size’, said the monkey. He took a bite from the bigger piece.
‘Oh, now it’s smaller than the other piece. I will just take a little bite from this piece now’, said the monkey. The monkey took another bite. The two cats sat in front of the monkey, looking at the loaf of bread they found getting smaller and smaller.
When all the loaf was eaten by the monkey, the monkey said, ‘I am sorry. It was really difficult to break that loaf into two pieces the same size. I must go now’. And the monkey jumped into the tree and left.
The cats were very unhappy. ‘Let’s not fight again’, said one of the cats. ‘Every time we fight someone else wins and we both stay hungry’. ‘I agree’, said the other cat.
