Questions 11-15

Hi Dave,
Thanks for coming to my birthday party and for the lovely gift ‘The DVD Rewinder’ you gave me. Now I will be able to rewind all my DVDs to the beginning very easily, using this machine – at least that’s what I told my brother and he believed me! He always believes things that are not true and later gets angry when we laugh at him.
I must tell you about another gift I got which is also fantastic. It is ‘The Burger Holder’. Yes, it holds your burger for you. My cousin who lives in New York sent it to me. I just had my first burger in this yesterday, and it was wonderful. I’m sure it makes the burger taste better, but my sister says this is my imagination and that the burger tastes the same.
Usually, when you bite into a burger everything wants to come out the other end, but this stops it. My favourite thing about the burger holder is that it keeps my hands and my clothes clean. I can’t remember how many stains I got on my clothes from eating burgers.
The only problem is that I like to eat a Big Mac, but it does not fit into this burger holder. I will ask my cousin to buy a bigger one for me.
My uncle says he loves the idea and wants to order thousands of them from China and sell them here. If he does, I will buy them as birthday presents for all my friends. Well, perhaps not all my friends because I saw on the internet that they cost €15 each.
My dad thinks it is a silly invention and says he gets angry when people spend money on things like this. When I tell him that it is great because it keeps my clothes clean, he says that it’s cheaper to buy new clothes than buy a burger holder. I think he says this just because he doesn’t like burgers.
Hope to see you soon,
Tammy

The British Weather Forecast
Good evening and here is the weather forecast for the next few days. The hot weather over the last 10 hours has been (16) life very uncomfortable for most people in Britain. People are asking if this will continue. It is very difficult to (17) how long this will last but if you wake up in the morning and there is a big yellow ball in the sky don’t panic because this is just the sun visiting Britain. If, on the (18) hand, you wake up and see a white blanket all over your garden, then you know the weather has returned to normal.
If you do decide to go (19) take an umbrella with you. In Britain, there is always a fifty percent (20) of rain. We don’t expect any hurricanes this week but remember this is Britain and (21) can happen.
We are sure there will be cold weather in (22) part of Britain because there is always a place with such weather. If you are in such a place, remember to (23) warm or you might get a bad cold and pass it on to other people. People are getting sick and visiting their doctor just because they don’t listen to our weather forecast, so listen carefully and (24) our advice - especially when we are right. It’s not easy, of course, to say what the weather will be like and sometimes we get the weather forecast wrong, but you should just take things as they come and (25) complaining.
We will be back for another weather forecast in a few days. Have a nice evening.

Part 6 - Reading
Questions 36-40
Read about the new Hyperloop and answer the questions.
Choose A, B, C or D
The Hyperloop is the new reality. On November 8th, 2020, the first passengers travelled safely on a hyperloop – making transportation history. The Hyperloop will be able to carry passengers and even cars at speeds of 1,200 km per hour. That’s ten times faster than a normal train.
It’s possible that one of the first countries to use the Hyperloop will be Saudi Arabia - if the plan is approved by the government there. It will connect the biggest cities in the country in about one hour. Today, the same journey takes over nine hours by car. The Hyperloop will run on solar power, and this means less pollution.
Virgin Hyperloop, the same company that recently went into space, is the only company that has tested the technology and hopes to have the system in place in five years from now. Travelling by Hyperloop will be like travelling by metro, but one difference is that everyone will be seated and must wear a seat belt.
Some people say that although you will be travelling above the ground, you will be inside a tube so you will not have a view of the countryside as you do on a train.
This is true. But even if you could have a view; what would you see when you are travelling at 1,200 km per hour? Also, we must not forget that most of our journeys by metro are underground and we see very little.
Others say that the Hyperloop is very expensive to build, and this means that the cost of travel will also be extremely expensive. However, the company says the cost will be no greater than the cost of air travel and faster because you will not need to go to airports and board planes. You will simply go to your nearest Hyperloop station and take the Hyperloop to wherever you want to go.
